A rejuvenation honors the building’s past while creating a vibrant foundation for the future.
HURLEY COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT CENTER RENOVATION
Location: Summerville, Georgia
When asked to restore a mid-century design masterpiece that is falling apart, many architects shy away from the challenge. We embrace it.
The brief was challenging – to transform a dilapidated structure riddled with moisture damage and unsightly later alterations. As well as this, the owner wanted to use this empty building as a community development center in memory of his parents.
We opened up the original lobby to reintroduce more space and light, while preserving original features such as its terrazzo floors, marble counters, rich woodwork, and iconic vault doors. New injections complement the building’s existing terrazzo and marble, while a subtle plaid-patterned carpet adds warmth.
Thoughtfully transforming a deteriorating structure into a timeless showpiece, we saw potential in spaces where many couldn’t.
